Gift Giving On A Budget

Saturday, December 13, 2008

As we all know the economy is in the pooper, many many people have been affected.  Many jobs have been lost, hours have been cut so on and so forth.  Even people with jobs are leary of over-spending.  I’ve heard so many stories of people and their families having to deal with this.  Then there are just some people who are naturally frugal or creative.  Whatever your case may be I’ve compiled some budget friendly gift giving ideas.  Time to get busy, only 12 more days!

BAKED GOODS-This is a tried and true gift that many people do on a budget or not.  Who doesn’t love a tasty treat.  Pies, fudge, gingerbread men, assorted cookies, cupcakes, cakes….mmmm my mouth is practically watering thinking about it.  Need some recipe ideas?  Check out Baking Bites, Kraft Foods, Sweet Treats Baking Blog.

HANDMADE GIFT CERTIFICATES–  Handout gift certifcates for services you can provide free of cost.  Some ideas:  1 FAVORITE MEAL, 1 FAVORITE DESSERT, 20 Minute Back Massage, HUGS n KISSES, MOONLIGHT WALK, BABYSITTING, SPECIFIC CHORES.  You get the idea, right?

MOVIE WATCHING BASKET: Can be mostly made from the dollar store.  Basket or large popcorn bowl, popcorn, sweet treat, sour treat, 2 whimsical glasses and a drink.  And gift certificate for the cost of a rental.  Want to take it a step further, put in a throw blanket.

SMALL SCRAPBOOKS:  Take pictures of the person or family of that person and incorporate it into a scrapbook.  Scrapbooks can be found at the dollar store, you could make scrapbook pages on your computer and print them out.  Look around your house for leftover materials.  Best of all it’s a personal special gift and that person won’t have to sit down and do it.

CANDY FILLED MUGS–  Pick out the mug of your choice, fill with chocolates, mints, gummy bears…whatever your heart desires.  Wrap with shrink rap, curl some ribbon and wa-la you have gift.

The ideas are endless if you just think outside the box.  The dollar store is such a great place to start, you can make just about any kind of gift basket you can think up.  You would be amazed at the items you can score at Goodwill, Salvation Army, your local thrift or economy store.  Often times brand new items.  Don’t forget ebay and search items lowest price first.  And last but not least internet recycling groups where you can give and or receive free items can truly come in handy.

Finally don’t forget the true reason for the season.  God.  I truly believe without God I would not have the blessings that I have in my life and that with him all things are possible.  Although things may seem dreary or impossible, take the time to look for the silver lining…it’s there!  Gifts do not always come in the form of a present, it can come in the form of love, family, health…you get it right?
